“How to get a flat stomach”…. Hmmmm. This is not usually the kind of advice I give out here on Thank Your Body. And for good reason. In a world that worships thinness and continues to bombard us with unhealthy and unrealistic body images, I think most of the “hype” around getting a flat stomach is often at the expense of real health. Not to mention it negates that fact that you can achieve health at almost any size.
And yet, having said that, the tips I’m going to share in this post may surprise you. I’m not going to promote crunches (please, no!), restrictive diets, or torturing “suck it in” techniques.

Aside from the physical side of it that helps you burn calories, the main reason yoga can help you lose weight actually comes from the mental side of it.
Certain every day actions that require rotation of the head may be taken for granted when feeling healthy. Once neck pain occurs, these everyday actions can feel impossible to achieve. For example, looking over the shoulder to switch lanes while driving or simply laying the head down on a pillow at night can be challenging. In a yoga practice, postures that require shoulder abduction, flexion and extension can be painful or strenuous. Why? Because the levator scapula and upper trapezius muscles of the neck and shoulders assist in these directions of movement in the neck. (Dropping one ear to a shoulder is lateral flexion and head circles is an example of rotation.) If these muscles are pinched, tight, overstretched or misused, the body’s range of motion can be limited.
Sciatica describes leg pain, numbness or weakness that starts at the low back and travels down the sciatic nerve in the leg causing sciatica pain. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body which begins in the lower back and runs through the buttock and down the lower limb. In 2005, the Journal of Neurosurgery estimated that more than 5% of the adult population in the United States suffers from sciatica, and over a lifetime, an individual has a 40% probability of experiencing it but the good news is that targeted yoga practice can help you to overcome the pain.
I bought a program, and it turned out it wasn’t right for me. I wondered if yoga was just “too much work,” and I should just give up. I had to take a few steps back and work on some of the fundamentals of the practice. As soon as I began focusing on the right things, EVERYTHING changed. I saw results, and FAST.
